Spring Statement Commentary

Stuart Dodson, CEO of True Potential Wealth Management, appeared alongside a panel of top experts at FT Adviser to deliver their real-time reaction to the Spring Statement.

Below is Stuart’s response to the Chancellor’s announcement.

First published by FT Adviser on 3rd March, 2026.

“Today’s Spring Statement was largely an exercise in reassurance rather than revelation. The Chancellor was keen to stay the course, reaffirming existing commitments with little in the way of new detail – and from a wealth planning perspective, that is perhaps both the headline and the limitation.

The high-level narrative around falling inflation, reduced borrowing and lower interest rates is broadly welcome.

For advisers, the key takeaway is that this is not an Autumn Budget moment. Clients need not be alarmed, and we are unlikely to see the same reactive conversations around ISAs, pensions or Inheritance Tax planning that followed October’s statement.

What is harder to dismiss, however, is the broader economic context. Growth remains subdued, unemployment is rising, and the OBR’s forecasts, while modestly improved, do little to strengthen the UK’s attractiveness as an investment destination at a time of considerable global uncertainty. Without clearer strategies to stimulate growth and support employment, the foundations remain fragile.

For now, advisers should hold steady and focus on reassuring clients. The fundamentals of good financial planning haven’t changed, and neither, it seems, has much else.”
